Adaptive Music Demo
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
We wanted to make fast-paced music that worked well with the varying levels of intensity in a game. Do test and showcase this we used the game Mirror's Edge, famous for it's fast-paced gameplay. As you can see in te video above the music adapts itself to the situation in the game.
To achieve this we used FMOD-studio, a piece of software designed specifically for audio integration in games. We programmed the parameters and composed the music to be able to adapt relatively fast.
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Teddy Terror has been our first serious project as Runic Sounds. Altough it is a small game we've learned a lot from it. Making a soundtrack that is original as well as fun to hear even after playing the game for hours was one of the big obstacles. The originality of this soundtrack oritinats from the chiptune like base backed by orchestral elements.
In this video you can see the Steam Greenlight trailer from 2014 with our soundtrack and sounddesign.
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Divided, or 'Bosbeestje', is a game made for autistic childeren. It's focus is on communication and working together with others. Basically the game gives two childeren the task to clean and cheer a grumpy little monster till it is happy again.
"The kids gave very positive reactions on the sounds, especially the little monsters' sound design. At the third playtest the sounds were the dicisive factor: one of the testers was very shy and stared for +/- 40 of 50 minutes at the wall. The other kid was obsessively tapping the monster, so that the monster was often growling. At a certain moment the shy kid was so interested by the monsters' sounds that he came looking. In the end he was enthusiasticly playing along and solving puzzles.
I just want to say: without your sound the game wouldn't have been such a succes!"

Even though I always wanted to create game audio, I didn't know the possibilities until after I graduated from Japanese language and culture studies at the University of Leiden. After which I started following Game Audio Design at the HKU (High School of Arts Utrecht).
I've played the flute since I was eight and have since expanded with various ethnic woodwinds such as the tin whistle, ocarina and shakuhachi. I adore games of all kind in all their might and have tried to learn from classics and learn from modern hits. Whether it's an orchestra epic or a jazzy tune I love to create it if it fits the game or scene.
Because of past projects I know how important it is to have good communication, and then together create a world and/or experience that otherwise would be impossible. I'm also an enormous geek, immersing myself into everything fantasy, sci-fi and pretty much any good story. Until we meet!
I grew up in Tilburg Netherlands, where after graduating from highschool I worked for two years while looking for what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I decided to go for a career in music as I had an affinity with music: I started drumming by the age of 9 and composing when I was 16.
Trough the past years I've learned through trial and error - and a lot of help from mentors and colleagues - to fit the right music and sound-design onto the right game or movie. Every commission is a new challenge, and the harder the challenge, the more fun and satisfaction when it finally works!
As I thoroughly enjoy programming as well, and have been in touch with a lot of game-developers, I've become a self-taught programmer. This helps a lot in projects where our audio needs to be integrated in a game. From time to time we even try our hand on making a game ourselves. A result of this for example is the audiogame Space Junk.
I am currently studying Music Design for Games and Interaction at the University of Arts Utrecht. By combining what I have already learned about composing and production and what I learn everyday (at the university and projects we work on) I try to create original soundtracks best fitting their purpose.
